Man Charged In Burglary Attempt At Kid Rock's Home

CLARKSTON (WWJ/AP) - A 43-year-old man has been charged following an attempted burglary at musician Kid Rock's Southeast Michigan home.

Brian D. Keith of Oakland County's Independence Township was arraigned by video Tuesday in District Court in Clarkston on felony charges of attempted home invasion and malicious destruction property.

Keith, 43, asked for a court-appointed attorney. He's being held after bond was set at $75,000.

Saturday's arrest came after surveillance photos from security cameras on Kid Rock's Clarkston property were released. The photos showed a man ramming the gate Wednesday afternoon and then trying — without success — to break into the house.

Police say total damages to the security gate, the residence and the garage are in excess of $29,000.

Oakland County Sheriff's officials said two separate tips from the public led them to Keith.

In requesting a low bond, Keith told the judge he has problems with his legs. He had crutches at his side during the hearing.

"I had 15 screws and two plates put in my knee," Keith said. "Nurses come by every other day. I have to start intense physical therapy or else I'll never walk again."

Judge Joseph Fabrizio cited Keith's criminal record and lack of ties to the area in setting the bond high in relation to the charges. Keith has 14 convictions as an adult, including several for drunken driving and fraud, the judge said.

"I do not find that you have strong ties to the community," Fabrizio told Keith. "You have an out-of-state criminal history. While you have seven children, you do not have any custody of them."

Kid Rock, who has eight concerts in metro Detroit starting this weekend, had offered a $5,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest in the case.

He said on his website that he might have used deadly force had he been home during the break-in.

"Thank God I was not on the property at the time of this attempted break in. I am an avid hunter and marksman and I will not hesitate to shoot anyone who has myself or family in fear for our lives," Kid Rock said.

"I take the invasion of my personal space very seriously regardless of who you are and YES, I do profile people. I am currently profiling any balding white male on crutches driving a white creeper van," he added.

Authorities have said a 1994 Ford Club Wagon van, which was used to force open the gated driveway to the property, also was impounded.

Keith is being held at the Oakland County Jail. He's due back in court on Aug. 12.
