Good Samaritan Attacked Near Renaissance Center

DETROIT (WWJ) - Was it a set up?

Detroit police are investigating after a Good Samaritan was shot early Monday morning near the Renaissance Center.

Police said a man driving a Cadillac on Atwater Street at Antoine — right outside the RenCen — pulled over when he spotted what appeared to be a woman crying on the side of the road.

When he approached to try to assist the woman, that's when investigators say two men attacked and the Good Samaritan was shot.

The injured man was rushed to Detroit Receiving Hospital where he was listed in temporary serious condition.

The two men who jumped him were still on the run late in the morning.

Lisa Houghton-Snyder of Grosse Ile, a recent crime victim herself, wonders if the attack could be related to gang activity.

"Maybe ... there's a lot of that going on," Houghton-Snyder. "You know, when I was robbed, they got a partial recovery of my stuff and there was some other people's stuff in it.  The detective that's working on the case said it's a gang thing."

Police said it's unclear if it was a setup as an investigation continues.

The victim's name has not been released.
