Detroit Police Take Gunman Into Custody

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police say a barricaded gunman was taken into custody after holding officers at bay for hours.

The situation unfolded sometime after midnight Thursday at a home on American Street, near I-96 and Grand River on the city's west side.

Police were called to the home after neighbors reported hearing shots fired from within. While officers were negotiating with the man, he was periodically seen standing at a window with a weapon in his hand.

The man, who reportedly was drinking alcohol and has a history of medical issues, kept police at bay for about two hours before he was taken into custody.

Reports say SWAT team members found several guns inside the man's house, although a police official could not confirm that information.

No one was injured during the standoff.
