State To Review Detroit Write-In Votes Tuesday
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The Board of State Canvassers will meet next week to go over about 18,000 uncounted write-in ballots from Detroit's Aug. 6 mayoral primary.
The meeting will begin Tuesday morning at state offices on W. Grand Boulevard in Detroit.
Citizens are invited to attend the meeting. However, those who wish to address the board must submit a written request to the chairperson of the board prior to the opening of the meeting, which starts at 10:30 a.m. Citizens addressing the board are allotted three minutes and must stick to the agenda topic.
Wayne County canvassers referred the ballots to the state because they were tallied numerically instead of with hash marks. The election has yet to be certified.
County Sheriff Benny Napoleon and former medical center chief Mike Duggan finished far ahead of the other candidates and still will face each other in the November general election.
Unofficial results showed Duggan received 44,395 write-in votes. A residency issue forced his name off the primary ballot.
County canvassers have said they counted about 24,000 valid votes for Duggan and about 28,300 for Napoleon, a former Detroit police chief.
