1 Killed, 1 Critically Injured In Motorcycle Crash On I-696

ROSEVILLE (WWJ) - Police say a St. Clair Shores woman is clinging to life after being injured in a motorcycle accident that killed a 36-year-old Warren man.

Police said the crash happened just after midnight Tuesday on eastbound I-696 at 11 Mile Road.

According to police, the Warren man was trying to exit the freeway when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into the overpass fencing. The man, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 24-year-old woman, was transported to a local hospital and is currently listed in extremely grave condition, suffering from massive head injuries.

Police said neither the driver nor his passenger were wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Investigators believe the motorcyclist exited the freeway at an extremely high rate of speed and was unable to negotiate a bend in the road way at the top of the ramp. Unable to make the turn, the victim crashed head on into the protective wall and fencing that lines the overpass, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear if alcohol played a factor in the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
