Amtrak says the projects will cause some delays and modify schedules a bit … but the end result will be upgraded tracks and more reliable service.

The work involves more than 30 miles of new track and 130,000 new cross-ties, which will be installed by crews working 10-hour days.

When work is completed, travel time between Detroit and Chicago will be reduced by about two hours from the current six-and-a-half.

So, a quick trip to the Magnificent Mile, or perhaps the Navy Pier, could be done more frequently.
