Detroit Man Arrested In Apparent Bottle Return Scam

ROCHESTER HILLS (WWJ) - A 49-year-old Detroiter was arrested at a Rochester Hills grocery store after he apparently cashed-in phony bottle return slips.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said deputies were called to the Kroger on Livernois Road and Walton Boulevard around 5:50 p.m. Tuesday to investigate a potential fraud.

Kroger's fraud investigators told arriving deputies that they have been investigating two suspects who have cashed counterfeit bottle return slips from their stores over the past two months. The investigators told police the suspects are responsible for over $2,000 in fraudulent bottle returns.

On Tuesday, one of those suspects came into the store and cashed $50 in bottle return slips before he was detained by the fraud investigators, who called police.

The man, who was not identified, was arrested on fraud/uttering and publishing charges and lodged at the Oakland County Jail, pending an arraignment.
