Michigan Matters: Go Red For Women And John Durant

This week on Michigan Matters, Host Carol Cain sits down with Sharyl Smith, chairwoman of the Go Red for Women effort and also an executive at McLaren Macomb, discussed healthy advice for women of all ages to avoid heart disease.

Then, metro Detroit-born author, John Durant, who wrote "The Paleo Manifesto," appeared on the show to talk about his book -- three years in the making. Durant, who now lives in New York City, was in Detroit as part of his national book tour. His book, found on Amazon.com and at retailers like Barnes and Noble, offers a healthier look at how to live your life.

Finally, during the roundtable Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson joked that he wouldn't endorse either Detroit mayoral candidate "as it would be the kiss of death" for them.

While Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano said "that the mayor's race between Sheriff Benny Napoleon and former CEO Mike Duggan will be far closer than the polls are showing" and he "thinks Napoleon's career in crime prevention will be an advantage with voters". However, Ficano refused to offer an endorsement of either candidate. He also talked about his re-election in 2014 and offered his explanation of the Wayne County jail cost overruns and who was the blame.

And businesswoman Denise Ilitch, who has worked with both Napoleon and Duggan, gave a slight nod to Duggan "because of his turnaround background."
