Mich. Guard Technicians, Some Others Called Back To Work

LANSING (WWJ/AP) - Hundreds of Michigan National Guard members and some civilian employees affected by the partial government shutdown are being called back to work.

At the Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County's Harrison Township, about 650 civilian employees and military technicians of the 127th Wing have been instructed to report to work Tuesday.

That's after most of the furloughed civilian employees at the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command Life Cycle Management Command in Warren returned to work Monday. Roughly half of those 7,500 civilian workers were placed on furlough last week.

Maj. Gen. Gregory Vadnais, director of the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and adjutant-general of the Michigan National Guard, has said the Guard planned to continue to support key military operations, regardless of a shutdown. Last week, Vadnais said 900 technicians were likely affected by the shutdown.

The changes are part of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel's decision to reverse an earlier order to furlough over 330,000 civilian employees.

Congressional members argued that the civilian workers should remain on their jobs during the partial government shutdown under the Pay Our Military Act signed into law last month by President Obama.
