Body Found In Detroit Yard Identified As 19-Year-Old

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Authorities have identified a woman whose body was found on a front lawn near her west side Detroit home.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office said 19-year-old Kimberly Muse died of a gunshot wound to her chest.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office initially reported that the victim was a 16-year-old girl, but Muse's mother confirmed her identity late Wednesday.

Muse's body was found around 1 p.m. Sunday in the 3000 block of Oakman Boulevard. Police initially believed the shooting was accidental, but further investigation indicated otherwise. Soon, police focused in on 21-year-old Devin Brown, described as Muse's friend.

Prosecutors allege Brown, who is charged with manslaughter, shot Muse in the chest in broad daylight.

Also charged in the case is 18-year-old Kermil Smith, who was reportedly in the house when Muse was shot. Police say Smith, who is charged with obstruction of justice and being an accessory after the fact, lied to officers when they arrived to investigate Muse's death and hid the gun used in the shooting.

Brown and Smith are due back in court on Oct. 24 for preliminary examinations.
