Detroit Defeats Boston In Red Cross Blood Battle

DETROIT (WWJ) - Dropping ALCS Game Six to the Red Sox may have been a blow to Tigers fans, but Detroit beat Boston big in another battle.

Motown beat Beantown in the American Red Cross blood battle, with Detroit fans donating 3,123 pints to Boston's 2,865 pints.

"It's almost 6,000 blood donations — 5,988 to be exact," said Red Cross spokeswoman Bridget Tuohey. "And every single blood donation can help save up to three lives, so that's nearly 18,000 lives that can be impacted by this blood challenge."

Tuohey said blood donations are at their lowest levels in 15 years, and keeping enough blood on the shelves is a do or die proposition every day — not just during the playoffs.

You, too, can step to the plate and give the gift of life.
