Detroit Cop Injured As Suspects Flee Traffic Stop

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit police officer was injured while making a traffic stop near Eastern Market on the city's east side.

Detroit Police Sgt. Mike Woody tells WWJ, two officers were making a traffic stop on Russell near Alfred, around 9:15 Tuesday night.

As one of the officers approached the driver's side of the stopped vehicle, the driver took off, and hit the officer. Police were able to fire at least one shot at the suspect, but missed.

The injured officer was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital by his partner, and was able to walk in to the Emergency Room on his own.

Sgt. Woody says the suspect's vehicle, a black Jeep Liberty that had been stolen earlier during a carjacking, was later found on Van Dyke near Gratiot.

Police have three suspects in custody.
