DEARBORN (WWJ) - Dearborn police are on mosque watch.

The American Muslim Society — a place of worship for followers of Islam — has been robbed several times over the past few months.

Police say the culprit hits the mosque during prayer services, stealing personal items from a storage shelf before fleeing the building, located at at 9945 Vernor Hwy.

The latest two incidents occurred on Oct. 17, at around 2 p.m., and Oct. 24 at around 8 p.m.

Dearborn Chief of Police Ronald Haddad is calling on the public for help to track down whomever is responsible.

"This type of crime in a house of worship will not be tolerated," Haddad said, in a statement. "The community's assistance in identifying the suspect is instrumental in this investigation. "

The suspect is a thin, white male with thinning, short dark hair. He is approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall; with a mustache and beard or goatee.

Police say the man is known to roam the Dix/Vernor area.

Anyone with information should call Dearborn police.
