World Usability Day Coming Up Thursday

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- World Usability Day is Thursday, and there are at least three major events in Michigan to mark it.

"World Usability Day 2013" runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Michigan State University Union Ballroom in East Lansing.

MSU's World Usability Day event is hosted by MSU's Usability and Accessibility Research and Consulting organization, and will cover usability and accessibility topics relevant for IT and user experience professionals.

Speaker presentations will include "Top 10 Healthcare Usability Myths Debunked" from Lorraine Chapman, director of health user experience at Macadamian; "Behind the Curtain: Content and Design Issues in the Online Privacy Policies of Internet-Focused Organizations" from Anna Langhorne, assistant professor at the University of Dayton; and "A Web for Everyone: Accessibility as a Design Challenge" from
Whitney Quesenbery, co-director of the Center for Civic Design.

Meanwhile, in Detroit, a trio of organizations are offering "World Usability Day in the D" from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the 15th floor auditorium of the Compuware building, One Campus Martius. Sponsors are the Michigan Chapter of ACM SIGCHI, The Southeastern Michigan Chapter of Society for Technical Communciation, and The Michigan UxPA.

The keynote speaker is Dave Mitropoulos-Rundus, user experience architect at Quicken Loans, principal of Clear Usability LLC, and director of the annual Internet User Experience conference. His talk will focus on the usability aspects of heathcare.gov. Attendees will walk away with not only a deep understanding of what did and did not work with the site as it rolled out in early October, but with recommendations relevant to anyone who is a stakeholder for a company or organization who needs their website and other customer touch points to be inviting and promote successful use for a very broad range of visitors.

Finally, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., there's "World Usability Day Detroit," brought to you by the Detroit User Experience Group.

The venue is Grand Circus, 1570 Woodward Ave. Speakers will include "Connecting the Dots Using Content Strategy: Making Health Insurance Easy" from Jeff Greer, content strategist at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan; and "How To Infuse Your Medical User Interface With Pure Sweetness" from Steve Tengler, user experience director at Altia Inc.
