Detroit City Clerk Puts Daughter On Payroll

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey says her daughter is doing her "a favor" by working as an information technician in her office.

The City Council approved a contract for Lauren Winfrey on Thursday that pays $15.44 per hour from Oct. 14 through April 11, according to a report by The Detroit News. The contract was approved two days after the clerk was re-elected and will pay about $15,700 overall.

Janice Winfrey said Monday that her daughter, a graduate of the University of Michigan, stepped in when an employee gave a two-week notice. Lauren Winfrey works at the front desk and is filling one of two openings until she begins graduate school at Syracuse University.

Janice Winfrey said it's "not a position Lauren went to school to do. She's doing her mother a favor."
