VIDEO: Water Main Break On Detroit's Westside

DETROIT (WWJ) - A water main pipe broke early Friday morning flooding Evergreen Road just north of McNichols on Detroit's westside.

Water poured out of the pipe for several hours before a crew was able to shut off the valve around 8 a.m.

"The water is coming out in several spots, it's gushing, it's not bubbling," said Darnell Stewart, who works in the area.

A person answering an emergency hotline at the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department said it is unclear what caused the break, but it's not uncommon for a main to burst when temperatures drop.  It was about 15 degrees in Detroit overnight.

A call seeking further comment from the department wasn't immediately returned.  However, the Friday after Thanksgiving is a holiday for many offices.
