Wanted: Basic Necessities Under The Tree This Holiday

TROY (CBS Detroit) - While you're out shopping this week, why not pick up a few things for a family in need?

Community Housing Network (CHN) has launched its annual Adopt A Family program, and is looking for individuals and groups to help out.

With support from the community, CHN hopes to provide more than 600 families with basic necessities — and a wish or two —  this holiday season.

"Every year, the number of individuals we expect to help grows," said resource development coordinator Hailey Noonan, who is leading this year's effort. "The generosity of our donors means that someone who can fit all of their worldly possessions in a big plastic bag will receive wrapped gifts at the holidays."

Wish lists will be provided for families or individuals, many of whom are formerly homeless, and/or have a disability.

"Many wish lists include necessities such as sheets, towels and underwear. Adopt a Family is a way to give back and help others in a time of need," Noonan said.  Also common on the lists: warm coats, boots, hats and gloves.

Donors are asked to shop for items on the list — spending no more than $100 per recipient, and return the new and unused gifts wrapped and labeled by Dec. 9.
