Fire Crews Called Twice To Home With Illegal Electrical Hookup

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit firefighters were called twice to a home on the east side that was apparently being heated by an illegal electrical hookup.

Fire broke out early Wednesday morning at an occupied home in the 5300 block 3 Mile Drive, in a neighborhood near Outer Drive and I-94.

Chief David Johnson told WWJ's Mike Campbell that crews thought they extinguished the fire, but were called back to the home a couple of hours later when the fire rekindled.

"It just got up into the walls, up into the knee walls," Johnson said, adding that there was an illegal electrical hookup at the home.

Johnson said two men living in the home escaped without injuries.

DTE Energy was called to the home to investigate the situation, but declined to comment.

Resident Herman Reemus said the fire is just another sign the neighborhood is going downhill.

"Everybody is moving out and the squatters come in there and that's it. It's just been going down ever since," he said.

An investigation into a cause of fire is ongoing.
