'Buy Detroit' Shopping Excursion Buses Suburbanites Into The City

DETROIT (WWJ) - Got your holiday shopping done yet?

Tours this Saturday and Sunday will take you to a place you may never have shopped before: Detroit.

"As opposed to going out to the malls," said Mickey Lyons, Detroit Bus Company's tour coordinator, "we're bringing people back into Detroit from Royal Oak and Ferndale."

Why shop in Detroit?

"Because there's such an influx of great stores and great new talent coming into the city," Lyons told WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeil.  "Along with the people who've been there for quite a while. A great experience to see what the city has to offer now."

Among the stops:  the highly-touted Shinola, with homemade bikes, leather goods and other specialty gifts. They'll also stop at the City Bird, Nest, and the Seven and Livernois "Avenue of Fashion" with its brick sidewalks and new art galleries.

Lyons said the stores on the tour will be rolling out the red carpet. "A lot of vendors that we're working with are offering free drinks, champagne, mimosas, snacks, that kind of thing; and then we bring them back to their drop off point," he said.

Tickets for the "Buy Detroit: Independent Shopping Excursion" are $35, for tours running 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 14 and 15. The bus leaves from behind Gusoline Alley in Royal Oak and at the back of Rosie O'Grady's in Ferndale.
