Hooded Suspects On The Run After Failed ATM Smash-And-Grab

MONROE (WWJ) - Police hoping the public can help them locate two suspects who tried to steal an ATM from a gas station in Monroe County.

The attempted theft happened early Friday morning at a Marathon gas station on South Dixie Highway, between Dunbar and Albain roads in Monroe Township.

Police say they responded to the gas station after receiving a commercial burglary alarm shortly after 3 a.m. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the front doors and part of the wall had been heavily damaged, leaving a large entryway into the building.

Upon further investigation, police learned that a red or maroon SUV crashed through the doors of the gas station. Two suspects wearing hoodies then exited the SUV and tied a strap around the ATM, which was located just inside the store.

Police say the suspects tried to pull the ATM out of the store but were unsuccessful. After failing to remove the ATM, the SUV fled the scene.

The business was closed at the time of the incident and no one was injured.

A detailed description of the suspects was not immediately available. An investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information on the incident or the suspects is asked to contact the Monroe County Sheriff's Office at 734-240-7530.
