Woman Acquitted In 2011 Death Of 23-Month-Old Son

BAD AXE, Mich. (AP) - A jury has acquitted a Michigan woman of second-degree murder and all other charges in the 2011 death of her young son.

The Huron Daily Tribune of Bad Axe reports the verdict in the case of Jennifer Lynn Emerick was returned late Dec. 20 in Huron County Circuit Court.

A judge earlier this year had restored charges of second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse against the woman from Huron County's Sheridan Township. The trial began Dec. 12.

Prosecutors had said Emerick held Donavin Cochrane facedown into his pillow, causing the 23-month-old to die by asphyxiation on Dec. 29, 2011, at the family's home.

Defense lawyer Leon Weiss says the jury "got it right."

He had argued that the boy threw up and choked on his own vomit.
