Metro Detroit Sets Record For Snowiest Month Ever

DETROIT (WWJ) - It's another one for the record books.

Metro Detroit, last weekend, already broke the record for snowiest January in history with 38.3 inches on the ground.

And with Thursday night's snowfall, AccuWeather Meteorologist Dean DeVore said the region has set an all-time record for the snowiest month ever.

"We got eight-tenths of an inch, officially, at Detroit Metro Airport. So, that means the total for the month of January is 39.1 inches," DeVore said Friday morning.

That total eclipses the previous record of 38.5 inches for the snowiest month ever, set more than 100 years ago in February 1904.

"So, at least we have something to hang our hat on, right? A record," DeVore quipped.

And don't put the shovels away just yet -- Metro Detroit is expected to get up to six inches of snow over the next few days, with most of it falling during the day on Saturday. DeVore said the northern suburbs are likely to see the worst of it.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Livingston, Macomb, Oakland and St. Clair counties -- in effect from Saturday morning through Saturday evening.

Forecasters say there's potential for wet and heavy snow accumulation of 6 or more inches between sunrise Saturday and mid-Saturday afternoon, with additional accumulation possible into Sunday morning.
