Cirque du Soleil Brings "Varekai" To Detroit's Joe Louis Arena

DETROIT - (WWJ) - Cirque du Soleil returns to Detroit today for several performances of its show "Varekai" at Joe Louis Arena.

"Varekai" is Cirque du Soleil's interpretation of the story of Icarus and what happens to him after he loses his wings. Show publicist Vanessa Napoli says even if you've seen a Cirque show before, this one is completely different.

"What you're going to see is something that you've never seen before," Napoli said. "The costumes in Varekai are absolutely breathtaking; the clowns here are hilarious. The finale act is really something to see and something like we've never had in any Cirque du Soleil shows."

As the show's publicist, Napoli has certainly seen her share of Cirque du Soleil performances. But, it's something she never tires of.

"It has the ability to evoke emotion in me. I don't necessarily feel that I'm watching the show, but that I'm living the dream; that I'm escaping reality for two hours, and submersing myself in this world where I don't necessarily understand what the characters are saying, but it's all expressed through acrobatic language and through music and through beautiful costumes."

From its humble beginnings in 1984, Cirque du Soleil has grown into a worldwide phenomenon with 19 different shows touring the U.S and around the world, including Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom, just to name a few.

"If you wanna come and ... escape reality and lose yourself and submerse yourself into this really amazing theatrical, acrobatic piece, then this is exactly the show to see," according to Napoli.

And, keep in mind that if you're going to the show, you'll want to be in your seat at least 15 minutes early, Napoli says, "cause you don't wanna miss what happens right before the show starts."
