Online Court Records: MSU Recruit Jayru Campbell Facing Assault Charges

(WARNING: VIDEO CONTAINS EXPLICIT LANGUAGE)

DETROIT (WWJ) - High school junior Jayru Campbell, accused of body slamming a security guard at his school, is now facing assault charges according to online court documents.

Campbell, a standout quarterback for the Cass Tech High football team and MSU recruit, will be the focus of a press conference held by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy Tuesday at 2 p.m. Campbell is reportedly expected to be charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, and aggravated assault.

Police confirmed that Jayru Campbell is the man seen in a video picking up a security guard and slamming him into the floor as a crowd of students screams in disbelief. The incident, which happened as classes were letting out, was videotaped on a cell phone and uploaded to YouTube.

After the security guard hits the floor, Campbell is seen standing above him shouting, "Now what?" Campbell was blocked by others in the crowd until the security guard could compose himself and restrain his attacker.

It wasn't immediately clear what provoked the assault.

Campbell led Cass Tech to back to back state titles in 2011 and 2012, and has committed to play at Michigan State University in 2015.  It's not clear if the incident will affect his scholarship to MSU.

It's not the first time Campbell has been involved in an incident at Cass Tech. He was suspended from school and the first game of the 2014 season after reportedly punching someone in the handshake line following Cass Tech's 28-0 loss to Detroit Catholic Central in the semifinals last November.
