About Last Night Is All About Sex, Sex, Sex

DETROIT (WWJ) - Following a preview screening of the new movie, About Last Night, the one thing I wanted to know was whether or not there were real couples like Bernie (Kevin Hart) and Joan (Regina Hall)? The answer I received may - or may not - surprise you. But, it definitely surprised me.

Why? Well, maybe it's because I was raised to believe that a man should respect his woman -- and a woman should expect that from her man. I was also raised to believe that a woman should respect her man, and to this day, I wouldn't have it any other way.

In About Last Night, the only respect Bernie and Joan pay to one another is in the bedroom. In public - at nightclubs, parties, or wherever they run into one another - they're crude and disrespectful.

But, when I conducted an informal sampling of public opinion following the movie, I was surprised to hear women say they found that behavior funny and some even went on to say they were in relationships like that or knew other couples like that. Since the people telling me that were 30ish, I'm wondering: could it be an age thing?

There was, however, one woman who tried to make sense of it. She reasoned that since Bernie and Joan "were both crazy," as she put it, it was better to have two crazy people involved in a relationship together because there was no way it would work out if only one person in the relationship was crazy. I guess that's one way to look at it.

On the other hand, I could (and, for the sake of the next generation, I'm hoping other people can) appreciate the relationship between Danny (Michael Ealy) and Debbie (Joy Bryant). They meet on a blind date when Danny accompanies Bernie and Debbie accompanies Joan to the bar for a night out on the town. They hit it off and begin to start building a life together. More normal, yes, but no, not boring. They look good together (but who wouldn't look good holding hands with the handsome Michael Ealy?!). In one early scene, Bernie even makes note of Danny's good looks.

While Kevin Hart's fans will, undoubtedly, be expecting lots of laughs, I found them few and far between. Don't get me wrong; there are some scenes that'll make you smile -- and possibly even laugh -- but for the most part - even taking into consideration the relationship between Danny and Debbie - About Last Night is nothing more than a raunchy romp in the sack from beginning to end.

Note: Look for a cameo featuring former NFL star Terrell Owens as Debbie's former boyfriend.
