Cameras To Be Installed On City Buses In Effort To Deter Crime
DETROIT (WWJ) - The city of Detroit is beginning to install cameras on 50 buses in an effort to deter violence.
The plan is getting mixed reaction from passengers and drivers:
"Good idea .. people will be accountable for their actions when they know someone is watching them," said one passenger.
Another younger man told WWJ's Charlie Langton that he'll feel safer riding on the buses if there are cameras installed.
The move comes after the reported stabbing of a 14-year-old boy who tried to stop a fight between passengers.
Sharah Dukes of Detroit acknowledges that she is nervous when she travels by bus.
"There are a lot of ... ignorant people, it's a lot of drug activity on the buses, it's a lot of fights, crimes, just a lot of everything," she said.
The cameras are expected to be in place on the city's most troubled routes within a month.
D-DOT will equip limited number of buses both inside and outside the bus. There is hope that with federal money another 200 buses will get cameras fairly soon.
