Another Round Of Snow: Road Crews Clearing Major Freeways , Limited Snow Emergencies

DETROIT (WWJ) - Spring is scheduled to arrive later this month -- in just under three weeks, in fact -- but you wouldn't know it by the weather.

Sunday, southeastern Michigan was hit again with more snow and bitterly cold temperatures. With several inches of snow already on the ground, road crews have had to take to the streets and freeways once again.

In Wayne County, Cindy Dingell with the county's Roads Division, says it's all hands on deck.

"We had a full call-in of staff at 6:30 p.m, we've got about 90 trucks out in the system right now," said Dingell. "They started with salting at first to get a good layer down to prevent the snow from packing onto the surface of roads and right now they are out there doing a combination of both salting and plowing."

Oakland County Road Commission spokesman Craig Bryson says they're working on the freeways first.

"We're doing tandem plowing on I-75 - working hard on (I) 96 - (I)696, M-59 just really trying to get those as cleaned up as we can," said Bryson.

Bryson says more snow fell than they originally expected, but the county has called in all of its trucks in order to get the roads cleared.

Authorities are advising motorists to leave early and give yourself extra time to get to your destination ... and be sure to give the snow plows and salt trucks room to do their jobs.

Because of this latest round of snow, the cities of Royal Oak, Madison Heights and Flat Rock have declared snow emergencies.

A snow emergency means vehicles on city streets, preventing snow plows from getting through could be ticketed or towed.

If you do not see your city on the list above contact your police department (non-emergency) or go to your city's website.
