Now It's Murder, Teen Dies From Wounds Sustained In Weekend Shooting

DETROIT (WWJ) - An injury shooting that took place in the parking lot of a Detroit high school is now a crime of murder.

Nineteen-year-old Darryl Smith was shot in the parking lot on the city's east side Friday night, and died of his injuries on Sunday according to police.

Hiding her eyes behind large sunglasses and biting back tears, Elaine Redus spoke out about her grandson:  "My grandson is a good boy. And you know who you are, and you will get got," said Redus. "And I never believed in calling a human being an animal, but this right here, you need to be locked up - for life."

Police say they need your help catching the teen's killers:

Smith was fatally shot in a crowd after attending a school performance at the East English Village Preparatory Academy.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig says the teen had a bright future -- and his life was cut short when suspected gang members opened fire. "This young man was not involved in gang activity," said Craig. "We need the people to call, we know the streets are talking."
