Royal Oak Man Hit By Toronto Subway Car; Family Raises Funds

DETROIT (WWJ) - A 22-year-old Royal Oak man is fighting for his life -- after a trip to Toronto takes a horrific turn.

Cathy Lapico, of Detroit, says her nephew, Tommy Karabelski, is in a coma after being struck by a subway car this past Saturday.

"We get some good news and then you get the bad news that maybe he's, you know, had an episode where he's bottomed out and they can't seem to stabilize him quite yet," says Lapico.

Lapico says, so far -- thanks to a special YouCaring.com page -- more than $10,000 has been raised. She says donations are pouring in from across the country and beyond.

"It has absolutely gone viral. We have had donations from as far away as Germany. And they got another one from Arizona from just a father who said, 'I have two kids, can't imagine what you're going through.' And I think they got a $200 donation from him," says Lapico.

Lapico says her nephew will be in the hospital for at least the next month -- and the bills are already mounting up.
