Free Home Safety Checks For Seniors During National Safety Month

BIRMINGHAM (WWJ) - In recognition of National Safety Month, the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Birmingham and Southeast Oakland County is offering free home safety checks for local seniors.

President of the Home Instead Senior Care office in Birmingham, Burt Copple, says there is one major issue that the elderly face.

"A recent study by the Home Instead Network found that nearly a third of the ER visits by seniors to hospitals deal specifically with falls  or similar emergencies," Copple told WWJ Newsradio 950's Brooke Allen.

Copple says installing grab bars near the shower or tub is inexpensive and well worth it.

"A good quality bar costs anywhere from $30 to $60. You can install it yourself or have a pro do it for about $200," he said. "But if a senior can steady themselves getting in and out of the shower...that's the most dangerous place for seniors in the home."

Experts recommend that families conduct safety checks of their aging parents' homes at least once a year.

These safety inspections will be performed in Birmingham and Southeast Oakland County by local senior care experts through June 21.
