Dive Team Recovers Body Of Stony Creek Swimmer

SHELBY TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -  Members of the Macomb County Sheriff's Dive Team have recovered the body of a man who drowned in Stony Creek Lake.

According to Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, the 44-year-old Hazel Park resident disappeared while swimming with his nephew at Stony Creek Metropark Monday evening.

An initial search that began Monday night by Washington Township fire crews turned up no sign of the man, as rescuers tried and failed to locate exactly where he went under.

The man's body was found at around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday,  less than 100 feet from the Bay Point Beach shoreline.

His name will not be released pending the notification of family members.

Authorities are investigating to determine what may have led to the man's drowning.

This incident follows another at the same lake last month in which a 21-year-old Pontiac man drowned after he jumped into the water from a paddle boat.

The murky, man-made lake covers roughly 500 acres and is 36 feet deep at its deepest point, according to officials.
