Officials: Fermi 2 Nuclear Plant Reports Fuel Leak

FRENCHTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Federal officials say the Fermi 2 nuclear power plant in southeastern Michigan has reported a 2,500 gallon diesel fuel leak from one of its gas turbine generators.

The Monroe News reports the leak and spill happened around midday Tuesday at the DTE Energy Co. facility along Lake Erie in Monroe County's Frenchtown Township.

Plant spokesman Guy Cerullo tells The Associated Press on Thursday that the spill was captured in a containment basin that's designed for that purpose.

Brian Kemker, Fermi resident inspector for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, says no fuel reached the ground or any navigable water. The cause of the leak was under investigation. Cerullo says the spill was cleaned up.

State environmental officials were notified.

Kemker says the spill won't trigger any extra inspections for the plant.
