12-Year-Old Howell Girl Raising Money To Record 6 Original Songs

HOWELL (CBS Detroit) - A young singer/songwriter/musician has launched a crowd-funding campaign to get her music out to the masses. Grace is 12 years old and hopes to raise enough money to have her six original songs professionally recorded and duplicated on CD.

In a video posted on the campaign's page, Grace performs a Christian song titled "No Other Name." It was recorded at a youth event hosted by Olivet Nazarene University called Celebrate Life where she received a perfect score from judges. Grace can be seen smiling as the crowd applauds at the end of the song.

"I just decided that I wanted to write a song one summer and so I wrote down the lyrics first and then I went to the piano and started writing a melody," said Grace.

She ended up writing nine more Christian-themed songs -- but plans to have six of the best professionally recorded.

Grace's mother Lisa says she is proud of her daughter:

"Beyond anything that I could have imagined, not only for her accomplishments in music but just for the person she is, she's just an amazing kid," said her mom.

Grace said her music has a message:

"I try to encourage people with my music - encouragement about how God is there - about how he is merciful and I guess I would want people to know that."

The goal is $1,500, but Grace explains in the campaign's description that, beyond her initial goal, the money will allow her to upgrade her instruments.

"... I will be using any additional money that is raised toward the purchase of sound equipment and a new keyboard.  I would love to exceed the goal by a lot and be able to purchase a new piano, because mine is in really sad shape; but I'm thankful for what I have," she writes.

Anyone who donates at the $25 level will get a copy of "This is Grace" when it's produced.
