It's Back To School For Kids In Warren Consolidated's Year-Round District

WARREN (WWJ) - While most kids in Metro Detroit still have a few weeks of summer break left, it's back to school Monday morning for students in Warren.

Siersma Elementary is one of three buildings at Warren Consolidated Schools under the second year of the year-round format, this format offers the same number of learning days but with the month of July off and extended breaks throughout the rest of the year.

Principal David Murphy says that this schedule is popular with parents and students:

"The burnout wasn't quite as much and the lack of learning lost during the summer is also a big benefit."

He says they are seeing their highest kindergarten enrollment in five years.`

"You know last year we were worried with this conversion would our attendance be good in August? Would people wait until September anyway to come back, would there be a lot of vacation, would there be a lot of people just waiting and there were a few, but we were well over 90 percent attendance coming back in August," said Murphy.
