Boy Critical After Muskegon River Tubing Accident

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a 16-year-old boy was pulled unconscious from the Muskegon River after a tubing accident.

Big Rapids Public Safety Director Andrea Nerbonne says in a statement that the teen was taking part in an outing with the youth group from the Muslim Community of Western Suburbs on Saturday afternoon.

Nerbonne says group members were tubing in the river behind Big Rapids Middle School about 4:30 p.m. Saturday when he fell from his tube. She says the boy was pulled from the river near the mouth of Mitchell Creek and airlifted to Grand Rapids Spectrum Health.

The group is based in the Detroit suburb of Canton and says on its website that he's in critical condition and asks that people give charity in his name. He wasn't immediately identified.
