Police: Drunk Mom Left Toddler Outside In Rainstorm

MUSKEGON (WWJ/AP) - Police in western Michigan say a drunk woman left her toddler outside in a rainstorm while she stayed safe and dry inside a home.

Muskegon police say the 18-month-old girl was found by officers in the yard around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday "soaking wet from strong rainstorms that came through the area."

The toddler was outside for at least 45 minutes, police said, and was wearing only a diaper. She did not suffer a "permanent injury or damage."

Police originally ended up at the scene after receiving a call from a concerned neighbor who heard fighting inside the home. When police arrived, the 24-year-old mother was arguing with a man.

"It appears as though [officers] had to force entry into the home," Muskegon County Prosecutor D.J. Hilson told The Muskegon Chronicle. "They found the home in bad shape, living conditions-wise. The child was found in the backyard in a stroller."

The man, who had an outstanding warrant out for his arrest, was taken into custody after he was found hiding inside the home. The mother's blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit, according to reports.

Hilson said the toddler and two other children have since been removed from their mother's care. It's not clear whether she will face criminal charges.

A preliminary examination originally scheduled for Wednesday was adjourned until Friday because the woman failed to show up in family court.

The case remains under investigation.
