Update: Samsung Unveils New Enhancements To Galaxy Note 4, AT&T To Carry Phones

SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) - Samsung unveiled Wednesday an updated Galaxy Note, along with a new wearable and virtual reality headset, at the Samsung Unpacked event at the IFA trade show in Berlin.

At the event, which was streamed by by CNET, an updated Galaxy Note 4 was unveiled with a 5.7 inch screen with enhanced offerings for the stylus including multi-window functions; enhanced handwriting recognition which nearly mimics writing and advanced script such as calligraphy.

There is a function using the stylus for Smart Select, which allows users to capture - or cut - several pieces of content and dragged the items to use in an email or added to a notepad.

The new Samsung also offers a 16mp back camera and a 3.7mp front camera which is 60 percent brighter and the ability to take a panoramic-style of the selfie. The smart phone also has a battery which can be charged from 0 to 50 percent in 30 minutes and a multiple microphones which can record from eight directions and then play selected recordings.

And for those who like a bit of bling, Samsung has partnered with Swarovski has a crystal back case.

The Galaxy Note 4 is expected to be available in October.

Other devices which were unveiled, or upgrades offered, include:

  • Galaxy Note Edge, which is a special edition of the Note 4 with a curved display and "extends" the screen to the side of the phone. The thin edge offers users the opportunities to have apps on the side of the phone instead of the bottom; provide a ticker with information along with video and camera controls.
  • Samsung Gear S wearable smart phone on the wrist. The device can be operated independent of a smart phone, and offers a variety of new clock faces along with a simple swipe action to access notifications, widgets and apps. Users can also make phone calls on the wearable, utilize nearly 1,000 apps and access health platform that includes a pedometer, SPF gauge and Nike+ capabilities.
  • Samsung Gear VR, which is a virtual reality headset which has a spot for the Note 4 to provide the images for entertainment, gaming and education.  The headset was the created through a partnership with Oculus. Presenters stated that the headset simulated standing two inches in front of a 175-inch mega screen.

The Samsung event comes less than one week before Apple holds a media event where the company is expected to unveil the iPhone 6.

Update (1:55 p.m. Thursday)

AT&T confirmed it will be among the first U.S. carriers to offer the Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge. Officials with the company added that it will offer the VR, and a the Samsung Gear Circle Bluetooth headset.
