Cedar Point Loses Long-Held 'Best Amusement Park' Title To German Rival

SANDUSKY, Ohio (CBS Detroit) - Bummer. A German theme park has stolen Cedar Point's roller coaster crown.

For 16 straight years, the Ohio theme park — which is a favorite of many Michiganders — had won "Best Amusement Park" honors at the Golden Ticket Awards; but this year's winner is Europa-Park in Germany.

Cedar Point came in second, but still won "Best Steel Coaster" for its awe-inducing Millennium Force ride.

Kalahari Resort, also in Sandusky, was second in the "Best Indoor Water Park" category; and, for a 14th consecutive year, Mason, Ohio's Kings Island received recognition for the "Best Kids' Area in the World."

Amusement Today's Golden Ticket Awards are given to the highest-rated parks in approximately two dozen categories as determined by a panel of experienced amusement park fans from around the world. Headquartered in Arlington, Texas, Amusement Today is an international publication that covers amusement and waterpark news and trends.

Located on the shores of Lake Erie, Cedar Point boasts 72 rides, including 17 roller coasters — purportedly more rides than any park in the world. Built in 1870, Cedar Point is the second oldest amusement park in North America.

As summer winds down, the park is now open for HalloWeekends — a family fall festival of fun and frights — Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays, into the fall — through Nov. 2.  [For specific dates and park hours, check the schedule HERE].
