Police Chase Ends In Four-Car Pileup; Suspected Shoplifter Hospitalized

CLAWSON (WWJ) - Authorities say a police chase that started at a Meijer grocery store ended in a four-vehicle accident that left a suspected shoplifter with serious injuries.

The accident happened Wednesday morning on Crooks Road and Meijer Drive, just north of 14 Mile Road in Clawson.

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Charlie Langton said all four cars involved are heavily damaged.

Emergency crews used the Jaws of Life to extract the suspect from her vehicle. She was taken away from the scene in an ambulance. No other injuries were reported.

According to sources, Royal Oak police were chasing the woman, who allegedly stole merchandise from the Meijer store nearby, located at Coolidge Highway and Meijer Drive. As the suspect was fleeing from officers, she apparently drove through a red light at Crooks Road, causing the accident.

Margarita Salisolio was driving one of the vehicles involved in the crash.

"She was trying to outrun the police and she caused a four-car accident and she put herself in the hospital, over some pots and pans and socks and Meijer," she said. "There's socks, there's clothing [in the road]. It's crazy."

Officers from Clawson, Royal Oak and Troy police departments are assisting in the investigation.
