Teacher Suspended For Tweeting Sarcastic Remark About Pregnant Student

WYOMING, MI (WWJ) -- A teacher in the Wyoming School District near Grand Rapids is on a 13-day unpaid suspension after tweeting about one of her students who happens to be pregnant.

In the tweet, the unnamed teacher said "I'm sure the girl who is taking my economics class for the second time will make an excellent mom come December #sarcasm."

Students who saw the tweet notified school officials and will have a chance to transfer out of the teacher's course once the suspension is over.

In an interview with WOOD-TV, Wyoming Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Thomas Reeder described why district officials decided to take action.

"We said, 'This has to stop,'" Reeder said. "This one involved a student and students deserve to have their privacy. And staff, whether it's me or a teacher or a custodian, should never be talking about students. They should not be talking about students in general or [individually]."
