7-Year-Old Caught In Exchange Of Gunfire In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A seven-year old girl is hospitalized with critical injuries after being shot while playing outside her home.

The incident happened Sunday on Charest Street, near Eight Mile and Ryan roads.

India Williams was riding her bike when police say there was gunfire exchanged between two vehicles.

Sgt. Eren Stephens says the girl was struck Sunday as one vehicle followed another car "at a high rate of speed."

Family members told the Detroit Free Press the vehicles came "flying up" the block and were swerving, with one of the cars knocking over a garbage can shortly before Williams was hit.

She was shot twice in the chest.

Police are hoping anyone with information about the shooting will come forward.

In July, 8-year-old Jakari Pearson was killed while sleeping inside his home in a Detroit public housing project. Authorities say a bullet penetrated a wall.
