Demolition Begins To Make Way For Expanding IKEA In Canton

CANTON TWP. (WWJ/AP) - A building adjacent to an Ikea store in Canton is set to be demolished as part of the Swedish retailer's plan to expand its lone Michigan location.

The razing of the 30,000 square-foot building is to take place on Tuesday at Ford and Haggerty roads, just west of I-275.

The demolition is needed so the 311,000 square-foot Ikea store can add nearly 44,000 square-feet of space to its footprint. The project will include expanding the self-serve furniture area, where shoppers collect flat-packed furniture to take home on the same day. Other plans include rearranging customer service functions to the newly built part of the store and enlarging the home delivery area.

The store will remain open and operational during construction, maintaining its full product offering throughout the project's completion in Spring 2015.

The project calls for Ikea to pay the Canton Township approximately $250,000 to address traffic congestion in the area and make infrastructure improvements.
