Election 2014: Governor Snyder And Challenger Mark Schauer Clash In Debate

DETROIT (WWJ/AP)  - Republican Gov. Rick Snyder and Democratic challenger Mark Schauer have clashed in their only debate, sparring over the economy, taxes and education funding roughly three weeks before the election.

Snyder was boastful regarding Detroit's turnaround under his administration during the debate heard on WWJ Newsradio 950.

"Stop and think ," said Snyder. "Have you ever thought you'd see Detroit as well poised for a bright future as see today?"

"Mayor Duggan is supporting me because he knows that I will be a strong and active partner," responded Schauer.

Snyder says he helped turn around Michigan after a "lost decade" of job losses. Schauer criticized the governor's decision to eliminate or reduce tax exemptions that retirees received for pension income.

The men also clashed on whether Snyder cut school funding. Schauer says the cut happened, while Snyder says he increased state-based K-12 funding by more than $1 billion.

Schauer is a former congressman and state lawmaker.

Recent polls showed Snyder with a slight edge in the race.
