Leaked Snapchat Photos Released In the 'Snappening'

By Edward Cardenas

SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) - Tens of thousands of Snapchat photos allegedly stolen from a third-party website were posted online, The Daily Beast reported.

Snapchat, the popular photo sharing app, confirmed that users were "victimized," but according to a post on Twitter, the company claimed pictures and videos were not from their servers.

"Snapchatters were victimized by their use of third-party apps to send and receive Snaps, a practice that we expressly prohibit in our ToU," the company wrote in a Tweet.

Hackers are claiming up to 200,000 photos and videos, which include nude pictures, could be leaked in what some online sites are calling the "Snappening."

The hackers were reportedly able to access the photos and videos through a third-party app Snapsaved.com that allowed Snapchat users to save their photos, the USA Today reported. When Snapchat users utilize the app, photos shared would "disappear" in seconds.

But the third-party site collected the photos, and released the photos and videos on photo-sharing sites including 4chan, where celebrity photos were posted in August.

The Daily Beast reported that most of the users whose photos were hacked are from Europe, and there is concern that many of the images and videos could be of teens which could then lead to issues of child pornography.

The report added that Snapchat may have up to 100 million monthly users and up to 700 million snaps a day.
