Top 5 Dave Dombrowski Quotes From His End Of The Season Presser

5. In reference to Andrew Miller - "We really did make a good run at him," Dombrowski said Tuesday. "It was a situation where they thought they were going to call us back, and they didn't call us back, and they just decided to go in another direction. It wasn't like we didn't have a chance to – and basically when I asked him that, he said, 'Dave, we asked you for so much, and you said yes, but I couldn't even ask you for more. We just preferred this other player.'

4. On max Scherzer - "We had thorough conversations before the season, and I don't know that that's all dictated by us at this point," Dombrowski said. "I think we made ourself pretty well-known at that time, where we stood, and he's a quality pitcher, and we know that. He's done a lot for our organization, but it's apparent that his representative wanted him to test free agency, so that comes up in a couple weeks.

3. Can the Tigers re-sign Max Scherzer - "I think we probably made more of an effort to sign Max earlier in the year at that time, so I don't think your odds improve than what they were earlier because as I said at the time to them is that, well why would they improve if we have one-on-one ability to speak with you compared to him and 29 other clubs?" Dombrowski added. "But only time will tell."

2. Does not regret the Doug Fister trade - "I don't regret the deal," Dombrowski said. "It was a situation at the particular time that we were making a move. Our starting pitching was not our downfall this year, particularly early in the year, and then really what it came down to when we made the Price acquisition, it was more of a situation where – it was kind of two-fold, but really at that point there, [starter Justin] Verlander was not the Verlander from the year before, so we felt that we needed to do something to kind of help ourselves at the top of the rotation, and that's what ended up taking place at that particular time.

1. Robbie Ray wasn't ready - "But when you look at the five starters we had early in the season, they pitched very well for us," Dombrowski said. "I know that Ray wasn't ready, but we still like Ray as we go forward."
