Felony Charges Dismissed Against Jayru Campbell In Alleged Attack On Teen Girl

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A Detroit judge has dismissed three felony charges against a former Cass Tech football star accused of assaulting his girlfriend.

Jayru Campbell, 17,  remains in jail while facing a 93-day misdemeanor domestic violence charge in the alleged attack that occurred just hours after he was released from jail for body-slamming a school security officer.

Prosecutors say Campbell assaulted the 17-year-old girl in a stairwell at Cass Technical High School last month as the two argued over something on her cell phone.

Video allegedly shows Campbell grabbing the phone, pushing the girl and then grabbing her around her neck. Campbell allegedly then grabbed her around her waist and picked her up off the ground. It reportedly took a group of Campbell's fellow football players to pull him off the girl.

Campbell had been charged with intent to do bodily harm, unarmed robbery, a domestic violence charge, and fraudulent use of a computer in connection with the incident.

The Detroit News reported 36th District Judge Ruth Carter said she didn't believe it was Campbell's intent to keep the phone, and that she didn't believe prosecutors were able to prove he had  intended to do great bodily harm to her.

As a quarterback, Campbell led Cass Tech to back to back state titles in 2011 and 2012. He had committed to play at Michigan State University in 2015, but later changed his mind.

In May, a judge sentenced Campbell to 60 days in jail after he admitted to the Jan. 22 body-slamming, which also was caught on video.
