Vintage Apple One Nets Almost A Million Dollars At Auction; Henry Ford Museum Makes Winning Bid

DEARBORN (WWJ/AP) - A vintage Apple computer that was one of only 50 made in Steve Jobs' garage in 1976 sold for $905,000 at auction, far exceeding pre-sale estimates and outdoing a previous high price of more than $671,000 paid in Germany last year.

Bonhams auction house says the winning bid, which includes its premium, came from The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.

"We went in with a very positive attitude," Patricia Mooradian, president of the Henry Ford, told WWJ's Jackie Paige. "It was competitive and we definitely had a limit set, there's no question we had a limit set. We had done a lot of homework and researched the various different Apple Ones that had been on auction before, what they went for, and so we were prepared. It's very rare, an Apple One. Especially an operating Apple One, it's very, very rare."

The computer, which had been estimated to sell for $300,000 to $50,000, has an intact motherboard and a vintage keyboard and monitor. It also has a power supply contained in a wooden box and two tape decks.
