Police Tow Abandoned Vehicles To Reduce Arson Ahead Of Halloween

DETROIT (AP) - Police will begin towing abandoned vehicles on Detroit streets heading into the three-day Halloween period known as "Angels' Night."

Some vehicles will be removed Tuesday.

Officials also will give updates on the city's annual anti-arson campaign that includes neighborhood patrols beginning Thursday by thousands of volunteers.

Vacant houses, buildings, garages and even cars left on streets and in lots have been targeted by arsonists in past years.

Water department crews and firefighters began inspecting and repairing hydrants last week to make sure they are working ahead of what once was called Devil's Night.

More than 800 fires were reported over that time in 1984. Last year, 95 were reported.
