DETROIT (WWJ) - The 31-year-old father of young boy who police say accidentally shot himself has been arraigned on felony charges.

Decovier English of Detroit was charged with child abuse - fourth degree and careless discharge of a weapon causing injury in the shooting involving his 6-year-old son.

It happened Wednesday night at a home in the 18400 block of Algonac, near 7 Mile Road and Outer Drive, on the city's east side.

It's alleged that the child fired once, shooting himself in the hand with his father's gun, which he'd found in an upstairs bedroom. The child was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for the wound and his dad was arrested.

Bond for English was set at $10,000/10 percent.

He will be back in court for a preliminary exam on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 1:30 p. m.

This was the second time in three days a child was injured by accidental gunfire in Detroit.

Earlier this week, a 4-year-old Detroit boy shot himself in the thigh after his mother, 30-year-old Latasha Lum, fell asleep with the weapon in a holster.
