A Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman said authorities believe Dyer’s cellmate killed him. The cellmate, who was not named, has since been transferred to a higher security setting.

Dyer was sentenced in January to serve 25-50 years in prison for first-degree criminal sexual conduct. His death is the third violent incident reported at the facility in October, according to The Saginaw News.

An inmate attacked a corrections officer with a padlock inside a sock during a shift change on Oct. 17. The officer reportedly suffered a fractured skull and a punctured lung. Two days later, a fight broke out between several inmates in which one man was stabbed. The incident occurred in the same area where the corrections officer was attacked.
